About Us

District Profile

General information
Location: Northern Uganda, part of the Lango sub-region, approximately 60 km southeast of Lira.
Establishment: Created by the Ugandan parliament in 2005, becoming operational on July 1, 2006.
Area: 1,004 square kilometers.
Population: Approximately 233,127 (as of 2023/24).
Administrative structure: Comprises two constituencies (Dokolo North and Dokolo South) and 11 lower local governments, including Dokolo Town Council.
Economy
Main economic activity: Agriculture, with crops including millet, cassava, maize, sweet potatoes, and sorghum.
Other activities: Trade, with over 1,400 licensed businesses reported in 2023/24.
Tourism: Has tourism potential, particularly at the historical site in Kangai where Omukama Kabalga and Kabaka Mwanga were arrested, but it has not yet been monetized.
Infrastructure and development
Healthcare: The main hospital is Dokolo Health Center IV, located in Dokolo Town.
Education: The district has numerous primary and secondary schools, both government-aided and private, as well as technical schools.
Roads: Poor road conditions, such as the Dokolo–Namasale route, are a major challenge impacting transportation, access to markets, and overall development.
Energy: Electricity access is available through the national grid, with a commitment to extending it to all sub-counties.
Water: Significant investment has gone into water projects, including a 16 billion shillings national water project.
Challenges
Land disputes: A hindrance to development, with most land being communally owned.
Poor road conditions: Stifle economic activity and isolate communities.
Revenue generation: Weak performance in locally raised revenues is partly due to challenges like low utilization of systems and adverse weather.
